Unapologetically Episcopalian Campaign aims to transform the Church

Unapologetically EpiscopalianIn two years, just over 20,000 people have become fans of Unapologetically Episcopalian on Facebook. The group's founder, the Rev. Ron Pogue says, "I wanted to create a space for people to express their gratitude for the Episcopal Church and what God is doing in our churches." As Pogue puts it, “It was time to change the conversation from one of fear to one of hope, from rancor to gratitude.”

To celebrate 20,000 fans and two years of life, Pogue is encouraging fans of Unapologetically Episcopalian – and anyone who loves the Episcopal Church – to make a thank-offering donation to Forward Movement. “I love what Forward Movement is doing to make our church stronger and more vibrant,” Pogue said.

The executive director of Forward Movement, the Rev. Scott Gunn said, “For more than 75 years, Forward Movement has worked to reinvigorate the life of the church. I am thrilled that the virtual community of Facebook would rally around strengthening the Episcopal Church and the ministries of Forward Movement.”

Gunn and Pogue have created a list of projects that could be funded by the Unapologetically Episcopalian Campaign. With sufficient funds, these projects could all be funded and each one could be launched within weeks.

“Every dollar that comes in through the Unapologetically Episcopalian Campaign will go to fund one or more of these projects,” Gunn said. Pogue added, “I hope we can band together and make a generous gift that will create a spark which might ignite the Spirit in thousands and thousands of lives.”

Donations may be made using a credit card via Paypal. Donors may also call 800-543-1813 or send checks marked “UE Campaign” to Forward Movement, 412 Sycamore Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202. Subject to IRS regulations, donations may be tax deductible.

You do not need a PayPal account to make a donation online. It takes just a few seconds to make a gift to support this effort. If you don't have a PayPal account, simply click the small "Continue" link on lower-left corner of the donation page. Please keep reading to see what we can do with your help.

Forward Movement is now publishing and marketing Confirm not Conform

Confirm not Conform, a highly regarded confirmation program for youth and adults, will now be published by Forward Movement.

“I think people are going to find that the Confirm not Conform program will be greatly improved both in content and delivery,” said the Rev. Laura Toepfer, managing director at Confirm not Conform. “Forward Movement has lots of wonderful ideas about how to format and deliver this program in a way that is highly effective for churches.”

The program is known for encouraging youth and adults in the program to take seriously their own faith formation. It supports confirmation as a mature profession of faith—a faith that is articulated through a process of discernment and discovery. Hundreds of congregations across The Episcopal Church have used the program to almost universal acclaim.

The Rev. Scott Gunn, executive director of Forward Movement said, “Our mission is to reinvigorate the life of the church, and when we can engage youth in a journey of exploration and commitment, our mission achieved and the church is strengthened.”

The program is available for youth and adults for Episcopal congregations. An ecumenical version is in development. The entire program is delivered electronically, with downloadable instructional guides, course materials, and videos. Parishes can use the complete program or adapt it to their needs. Pricing for the updated program can be found here.

The Forward Movement Story

angel-of-light

A sense of weariness and resignation prevailed as the 51st General Convention of the Episcopal Church convened on October 10, 1934, in Atlantic City.

Loyal church people were anxious and fearful. Distrust of church leaders was pervasive. Revenues for the previous three years had fallen far short of projections, resulting in the curtailing of ministries and large-scale borrowing.

The Joint Committee on Program and Budget had been meeting all summer to attempt the apparently impossible—the gap seemed unbridgeable and the decline in giving seemed to signal a spiritual exhaustion throughout the church.

How could church morale be revived?

The effort had actually begun a few months earlier, in the spring of 1934, when a group of devoted churchmen, led by Harvey Firestone and Charles Taft, both wealthy laymen from Ohio, proposed a special offering to erase the debt, using the slogan “Hold the Line.”

An intensive campaign of visiting and letter-writing ensued. By the time the Everyman’s Offering (as the effort was called) was presented at the opening service of the Atlantic City Convention, enough had been raised to erase most of the debt incurred during the previous three years.

But the Everyman’s Offering did more than pay off loans. Bishop Henry Wise Hobson of Southern Ohio later wrote that “something had happened which changed the whole attitude and spirit of the Convention. The delegates realized that in spite of difficulties the church need not retreat,” and that people throughout the church were ready to shake off their lethargy.

A deputy from Tennessee is reputed to have said...

“This church needs more than a campaign to ‘hold the line.’ We need to move forward!”
