FRIDAY, April 16

John 16:1-15. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

We are doomed to hopeless frustration if we assume, as many Christians have, that the only way we can learn the Lord's will in our concrete decisions and dilemmas is to "look it up in the Bible." The Bible is not a book of prescriptive oracles. As an old hymn tells us, "New occasions teach new duties." New eras in human life bring new problems. We are, literally, always in a new situation. What does the Lord want us to do in it?

Christ told us before his death that he had many things more to tell us and teach us. He promised that he would go on teaching us, showing us his will for us down through the ages, through his blessed Spirit who dwells in us, who takes the things of Christ and shows them to us. And he keeps that promise with all who keep faith with him and rely upon him. In every new situation we shall have his light to guide us, if we turn to him in meditation, prayer, obedience; if we "practice the presence." We don't find all the answers in the Bible; but in the light of the ever-present Christ we see light. (1970)

Written by Mike Patterson,

This passage reflects one of the great challenges we face today. How do we discern God's will versus our own, often misleading, emotions? Maybe I can feel something is the right thing to do, but my feelings don't always produce the best results. Discerning God's will versus our own will often takes time, prayer, thinking, even consultation with another, such as a priest. Time lets our emotions cool and discernment to set in.

Written by Mary kier,

"Practice the presence of God" through meditation, reading, and prayer
thank you for that reminder. It reminds me of a bible passage I once read ... God wants our love, he is always waiting and desiring of our love. All we have to do is reach out to him and he rejoices.

Written by ELAINE DOAN,

What a challenge! To discern the will of God from the desires and opinions of our own flesh and mind. Only constant seeking God, consistent living "in the Presence", longing for whatever is God's will. Perhaps this is the highest goal!

Written by Wendy,

Scripture/the Bible do guide us in not "reinventing the wheel" as we discern in the power of the Holy Spirit direction in our time and circumstances through prayer and meditation. What something is and is not is always something we should/must keep in mind.

Written by Steve Doutt,

Wow! What refreshing conversation. This is what this space is meant to produce. As I read through everyone's insightful comments I was brought to a nice "centering place" where I will attempt to reside as I go through my work day. God Bless You.
