FRIDAY, April 22 Good Friday

John 18:1—19:42. The woman said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”

I had just gotten a promotion and an office. Sitting in it on my very first morning, I looked at the bare walls, not believing my good fortune and fearing I was in over my head.

Then I heard a heated exchange outside my closed door. One of the voices belonged to a senior staff member whom everyone revered. It was a volatile exchange and both parties spoke inappropriately.

Later, in the staff meeting, I listened as the staff member told his version. He said the client had attacked him and, with a trembling voice, that all of us would be in danger if this violent person were allowed to stay.

I wanted to speak up and say it wasn’t exactly as it was being told. Yes, the client had reacted in anger, but the dialogue had begun in an assaulting manner and they had both reacted in kind—I’d heard the whole thing and knew it was nothing like what was being reported!

The resulting crescendo of consensus in favor of the staff member left me afraid to speak. They kicked a young lady out of treatment as I hung my head and remained quiet.

Powerful message
Belief

Apr 22, 2011 at 7:34 am

Written by John Greer,

Peter, in the scripture choosen, was afraid to associate himself with Jesus and denied even knowing Christ -- as Christ had predicted. Along with other things, the older I've become, the more I've been able to express, without fear of adverse reaction of peers, my belief and "tell it as it is" -- as my rector told me once, "you've never had a problem expressing your thoughts, so why start now?"

Speaking out about your beliefs is another way to spread the gospel.
The other problem

Apr 22, 2011 at 8:34 am

Written by Stephen,

I have had the other problem. I speak up sometimes a the wrong time. As a 7th grader I spoke up when a teacher threw a student to the floor for frivolous reasons. I was then attacked by the teacher and I took it to the principal and a parent teacher, principal meeting got down to the issue. I am glad I spoke up. But there have been other times when I should have waited or found the appropriate venue at the best time to actually effect a difference. Sometimes we can speak our mind at the expense of doing real justice. And sometimes we are just wrong in our estimation because we didn't have the facts. Christianity is not an ideology but "a way".

Pause for God

Apr 22, 2011 at 9:04 am

Written by Mary Kier,

I tend to speak out before thinking-- especially when emotions run high. So I made up this phrase " pause for God" to remind myself to make room for God at the moment. It seems to give me clarity about what to say.

Written by Marco of San Francisco,

I do not know or know of the author of the meditations this month. Many of you do. I have been very touched, challenged and supported by his writings and equally so by all of you who took the time to share your thoughts, feelings and
life experience.

...thanks...

Written by Mike Armstrong,

You're not alone, Bo. Many of us, including me, have done the same thing and see ourselves in Peter every year at this time. The Good News, of course is that Peter and we have been forgiven and tried to do better. You certainly have.
Second Chances

Apr 22, 2011 at 11:59 am

Written by Barrie,

This person will definitely have a second chance to stand up and do the right thing. The staffer is bound to behave badly again; in fact, it is unlikely this same type of thing has not happened before. Thank God for second chances.
