Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

Forward Day By Day FRIDAY, August 14 (Jonathan Myrick Daniels)

FRIDAY, August 14 (Jonathan Myrick Daniels)

Mark 10:46-52. Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

The voice of faith in our nation has become a terribly conflicted thing. There are cries from many camps. Faith is proclaimed on the airwaves and the Internet and has become a requisite component of all political dialogue. Faith leads some to cry out for one thing while it leads others to call for the opposite. Passion for one's faith has led to division within families and communities, even to the point of violence. Xenophobia (fear of foreigners) has joined hands with pistiphobia (fear of faith) to cause suspicion among differing ethnic and faith traditions. Conflicting understandings of the mandates of faith threaten to undermine congregations, denominations, and global communions. There are times when I, and I suspect many others, would like the more strident voices of faith to take a break, to be silent for awhile.

The crowds rebuked Bartimaeus for crying out in faith for healing, "but he cried out all the more." Perhaps if the contemporary voices of faith cried more for God's mercy and less for their own way we might all find some healing.

Very well said and right on target.

Written by Mary Elizabeth M. Bonnet,

Having loved Jonathan dearly and knowing his heart well, I do not feel
he would agree with "Today's Meditation" commentator.
Jon worked loudly and vehemently for the Civil Rights cause, and was
martyred as a result of his strong convictions. Jonathan's faith and courage, his love for what he believed to be the Lord's will, allowed him
to become that voice.
May God bring forth many, many more idividuals like him, especially
those who will see that this nation doesn't fall!
