Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

FRIDAY, August 21

Mark 12:35-44. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.

From what do you give to God, from your abundance or from your all? While it is easier to give from one's abundance, after the bills are paid, the groceries are bought, and the vacation is planned, it is often tempting to treat such giving as a tip, a little something extra for the server. Giving from one's all means giving first. It is an act of faith, and as such it is not about "fair share" or tax write-offs or support for a favorite program at the church. Giving from one's all is about understanding that everything we have, everything we use to make our livelihood--our minds, our strength, the materials, even the time we have to work--is a gift from God.

John Wesley said, "Make as much as you can, save as much as you can, and give as much as you can." Giving from one's all keeps things in perspective. It saves us from the deceiving promise of idols which cannot and will not save us at all.

Your donation to Forward Movement brings Forward Day by Day and the gifts of faith and hope to people in hospitals, nursing homes, and prisons.

God Doesn't Need Your Money

Aug 22, 2009 at 9:28 am

Written by JohnS,

The above verse is a favorite for fund-raising activities at churches worldwide. While I agree that it is good to give to your church or favorite charity, I think it is irresponsible to tell people to give their tithe before expenses are paid or before we take care of our families. Having faith that "God will provide" sounds too much like the counterfeit "Gospel of Prosperity" that we see on TV (give God your money, and He will make you rich). Too many old widow ladies have been separated from their life's savings in the hopes that God will reward them in this life or the next. Meanwhile, swindlers and wolves in sheep's clothing are getting rich. Your church needs to keep the lights on, but God doesn't need your money.
