FRIDAY, December 18 Ember Day

Zechariah 7:8-8:8. Just as, when I called, they would not hear, so, when they called, I would not hear, says the LORD of hosts.

Who were these people whom the Lord refused to hear when they called upon him? They were those who had first refused to hear the Lord when he had called upon them--to render true judgments, practice compassion, and minister to the needy. They had asked from God what they had not themselves been willing to give. It is as in the Lord's Prayer where we pray that our heavenly Father forgive us in the same way that we forgive others. What we give determines what we receive. God invites all his creatures into his embrace, but we can opt out by clinging to ungodly attitudes and behaviors. If we find the channel through which God's forgiveness flows is blocked, the blockage is in us, not in God.

I am reminded of a prayer by St. Anselm (d. 1109) for his enemies: "Lord, whatever you cause me to desire for my enemies, give it to them and give the same to me, and if what I ask for them is ever outside the rule of love, whether through weakness, ignorance, or malice, give it neither to them, good Lord, nor to me."

Written by Steve Doutt,

Good tie-in to the Lord's prayer. We say it so often and automatically that I often gloss over the commitment that I am making to suffer the consequences of my own action, or inaction.

Written by Andrea,

But I wonder, is it ever too late to "call upon the Lord"? I agree that it is our refusal to respond to God that blocks us from God's love and grace. But I also have observed in my own life that sometimes God brings me to my knees and makes me willing to call upon God first, and only then can God work on removing those blockages in my soul that have stopped the flow of love and grace. Though it's hard for me to understand, for the sake of my own relationship with God through Jesus, I have to believe it's never too late to call upon the Lord.

Written by Robin,

So appropriate for my circumstances of today. In the midst of my own 'hustle and bustle', this has caused me to stop and think about my actions and reactions to calls from others today that, in the least little way, disrupt my own plans and how I intend for things to go. Oh Lord, forgive me...I have so far to go smilies/smiley.gif
