Matthew 1:1-17. An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

As a teacher of English in a multicultural and multi-lingual setting, I interact every day with young adults from all over the world. Many of them negotiate with remarkable grace the divide that separates their daily lives in an American university from the daily lives of their parents in traditional cultures elsewhere. I am awed by their ability to examine, understand, and appreciate new ideas without compromising the core of their cultural beliefs. Perhaps they are able to do this because they know so well and so deeply who they are and where they come from.

This introduction to Matthew’s Gospel recites Christ’s lineage. It may seem like an outmoded, archaic reference—Manasseh was the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, and so on for generation after generation. Why should that matter to us? But Jesus knew who he was and where he had come from. That knowledge empowered him to be the new idea. He established God’s kingdom on the foundation of the ancient traditions of his region and culture, and they live on for us even now. The new need not supplant what came before; tradition provides the foundation.

Written by A,

"They know so well who they are and where they come from...". As children of God, one would hope to have a steadfast knowledge of that but as the humans we are, it can be a daily challenge. It is the search and the struggle and the journey that helps us become pilgrims and not tourists in our life, right?
Rest assured I am in good hands in my journey, friends, clergy and professional. I am simply reaching out in yet another community of God's children to become a more steadfast pilgrim. If my words have offended, I apologize but I will persevere to engage all ways to grow deeper in faith, closer to Christ and to know better who I am and where I come from.
Blessings to all.

Written by Bonnie,

An acquaintance of mine has adopted orphans from all around the world. In addition to not being wanted by their own blood relatives, they have other issues (i.e. medical, etc). They just got the official news that all adoptions are now legal. The children are now legally part of a family. What wonderful Christmas news!

What wonderful Christmas news for us, who have been adopted into the family of God.

"How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He's the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son." Ephesians 1:3-6 (The Message)
