Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
John 8:12-19. I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
Light is one of those universal images which, in one way or another, recurs in many religions. Thus, it was no surprise when, in the fourth century, the church selected the Roman celebration of Sol Invictus (December 25) to be the yearly festival of the coming of the True Light into the world.
Small children, being tucked into bed, often ask to have the door left open just a crack. “The light shines in darkness and the darkness did not overcome it” (John 1:5). Children may not know the words, but intuitively, early in life, we sense light’s importance.
The light of Jesus is inward, a light known to those who have consciously and deliberately made Jesus their companion. He offers us his presence, his light, in all sorts of places and circumstances, and never more so than when, in the name of Christ, we are called to enter the darkness. (1996)
