Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 143. Let me hear of your loving-kindness in the morning, for I put my trust in you; show me the road that I must walk, for I lift up my soul to you.
In Tonga, the land of my birth, the cockerels crow to wake us to a new day.
But also as the bells toll and the drums beat, the sound travels through the cool morning air to summon people to prayer. There is an invitation to begin the day with the worship of God, with meditation on the word of God that speaks God’s loving-kindness. There is an invitation to seek God’s guidance for the work and activities of the day.
Two thousand years before Jesus, at around the time Abraham and Sarah set out on their journey of faith, the first Polynesians set out on the uncharted ocean to explore unknown regions and find new lands. Traveling immense distances, they became the greatest of navigators, finding their way by observing the stars.
Today we need guidance to navigate the complexity of our lives, that we might move forward with courage. Guidance comes from a faithful God. The prayer of the psalmist can be ours: “I put my trust in you; show me the road that I must walk.”
