FRIDAY, January 7

John 2:1-11. The servants who had drawn the water knew.

At the marriage feast in Cana of Galilee, it was Mary who saw the need and interceded, saying to Jesus,  “They have no wine.” And it was Jesus who changed the water into wine. But it was left to the servant to do  the work. Mary said, “Do whatever he tells you.” Jesus said, “Fill the jars with water,” and then, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” And it was only when they did that—only in the act of pouring itself—that the water was seen to have become wine.

We are the servants: the church is a society of servants. We’re to serve the guests at God’s party—all the guests, whether we would have invited them ourselves or not. God gives the wine of his presence through us. He runs his household through us. He feeds his  hungry guests through our hands. We fill the jugs with water and pour it out because that’s the way God has arranged it.

He could do otherwise. God could get along without the church. But he doesn’t choose to. He gives his guests into the hands of his household. The great outpouring of God’s charity is in our hands. (1970)

What would Jesus think of our churches?

Jan 07, 2011 at 11:57 am

Written by Jan,

I have often quipped that the only problem with our churches is that Jesus chose to entrust them to us humans. I ponder what He would think of all the divisions in our church - denominations, factions, politics, etc. Most good people try to consult Him and act in accordance, but sometimes it goes horribly wrong and the secular world judges all of us by the mistakes of the few. Thank goodness, God has the big picture and guides us through alll of this.
"God gives the wine of his presence through us"

Written by Sam,

The above cited line from today's meditation resonates with me. It's disappointing in 2011 America to see so many Christians happy to keep the wine for ourselves, because we think we earned it, rather than feeding "... his hungry guests through our hands." The meditation reinforces for me that we and the Church are indeed God's instruments or servants, hard as that is for me to live into daily.
Opportunities

Written by Tres L,

Sam, I agree with you - my resolution for 2011 was to be especially watchful for and responsive to the opportunities God places before us daily to help others, and so far I am finding it difficult to do so, with some successes and some days where I seem to miss the opportunities. Part of it, I think, is to work to focus less on the many distractions in our lives and society and look around for the hungry guests around us.

Whether we are successful in our goals to serve or not, the main thing is to keep trying and not be discouraged by our imperfection. God bless you all.
