Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

FRIDAY, July 15

Psalm 35. Fight those who fight me, O Lord; attack those who are attacking me. Take up shield and armor and rise up to help me.

Each season of movie premieres offers an action film.  Situation: nice person. Complication: bad guys. Resolution: wardrobe, tricks, and weapons so that good prevails.

Our interior lives are just as dramatic as Hollywood. As in films, we struggle with the bad guys and we arm ourselves with weapons and suit up in armor. When my grandmother had a devastating stroke, I was afraid not of her death but of a villain named neglect, that my beloved grandmother could seem like just another frail, elderly woman in her last days and might be ignored by the hospital staff. I wrapped on the cloak of prayer, praying for her and for the staff. I wore my best clothes when visiting, left candy for the staff, and made my presence known. Victory: she was loved.

Although we don’t star in blockbusters, we confront many enemies, named fear, depression, and anger, among others. As Christians, we are not defenseless. We call upon the Lord to lead us into battle, and we arm ourselves with prayer and spiritual power to march forward against oppressors so that goodness prevails.

We arm ourselves with prayer and spiritual power

Jul 15, 2011 at 7:27 am

Written by Chris,

What a wonderful devotional message and a fresh look at how we stru*gle with fear, depression, and anger. I find by arming myself through studying God's Word and prayer, more and more each day, fear, depression, and anger are being replaced with peace and grace, even as the battles continue. Thank you God for your message and for your messenger. In Jesus, Amen.

Written by Frank Holby,

Our worst foes are our own wayward, errant, unbelieving thoughts, and our minds are the real battleground. I'm grateful for Paul's challenge to "take every thought captive to obey Christ," which we can do since "the weapons of our warfare ... have divine power to destroy strongholds." (2 Corinthians 10)
