Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

FRIDAY, July 24 (Thomas à Kempis)

Psalm 54. I will offer you a freewill sacrifice.

As I write this, turmoil has entered the state agency for which I have worked for almost twenty years. New leaders are slashing benefits, enforcing restrictive policies, and ignoring the concerns of employees, many of whom have devoted a lifetime to their work.

Among the most grievous changes was the designation of all of us as "at-will" employees, meaning the leaders may dismiss anyone at any time for any reason. An unspoken loyalty in the past had stemmed from the understanding that one could devote herself to doing a good job and retire after decades of dedicated service. No more.

Yet from this sad time have emerged the faithful who have found counsel and encouragement from each other. God is talked about more in the offices. God is more often seen in our midst.

From the threat of "at-will" has come the promise of freewill--the choice many of us have made to put our trust in the Lord. Even if jobs are sacrificed, we know it is the Lord who sustains our life.

being infinitely patient

Written by Paulletta,

Everyone in this household has had their hours and wages cut... even the security of relying on each other through these hard times is threatened...the pantry is low...the bills keep coming...and now one of our members is seriously ill...and yet, the sun shines brightly this morning and deep inside my heart I know that God is with me, with us and I must be grateful for all that I do have and be infinitely patient... all things are in God's time, not mine.. and I chose to have faith and believe..

Written by Kathryn,

Although I had been an "at will" employee for years, when my law firm cut 5% of the staff, they did it as a lay-off with severance pay, and I am so grateful for that! It's difficult, but as you say, I am convinced that the Lord has a plan for me. And as I seek employment without any current success, I make a daily decision to enjoy the free time I have to catch up on life's details!

Written by Jan,

My heart breaks as I read today this meditation and comments. I too am an at will employee who tries to remember that at will might mean at God's will. These are frightening and hurt filled times, reminding us that it is for today's bread that we give thanks and that tomorrow is in God's gracious hands.
May we be courageous enough to give thanks for today and all its blessings.

Written by Judy,

Our family experienced the early 1980's economic down turn when many industries went to low-wage countries. It was at first devastating to realize how drastically our lifestyle had to change and how many dreams would never be fulfilled. But our God is faithful! We prayed and we served Him through those very lean years. We didn't always have what we thought we wanted, but we always had all we genuinely needed. Our wonderful church friends supported us spiritually and emotionally through that time. And without health insurance (a scarey experience) we enjoyed the healthiest period of our lives. We came to realize we were rich in everything that matters. Today our lifestyle remains basic and we know that what really matters is that God loves us and with Christ's help we can love Him and others. When non-essentials are removed, what really matters becomes very clear. It is only in the darkness that we can see the stars. We have been truly blessed! May the peace of the Lord, that passes all understanding, be with all who are going through difficult economic transitions....
