FRIDAY, June 10

Hebrews 8:1-13. Now the main point in what we are saying is this.

I must be honest and say that I am not much of a fan of the Letter to the Hebrews. I don’t think I have ever preached a sermon on a passage from it. I have never taught a Bible study on it and I rarely read from it. It is not that I dislike the message. What Christian could disagree with its main points? Christ is our great High Priest, unblemished, who entered into the heavenly sanctuary and offered himself as a complete and perfect sacrifice once for all. Is there any theme more orthodox and central to our beliefs?

It is not the message but the method that I dislike. There is little poetry in the text. It is logical and dry, or so it seems to me. Yet I know that there are those who revel in its detailed and ordered explanations of Jesus’ life and death.

Such is the broad grace of the Bible. Many texts speak to many people. No text speaks to everyone. Yet within the covers of our Bibles we can all find the breath of the Spirit speaking peace to those who are far off and to those who are near.

Written by Chris,

My day begins with reading, studying, and praying with each daily devotional and listed scriptures. I added this part of my daily time with God some time ago, with the message and two of the scriptures. Today, I read them all. Many of the authors have their favorite or chosen scriptures, some I have not spent much time in. And to be perfectly honest, Hebrews is not one of my favorites either. It is dry but is to the point. Some of the authors list Psalm after Psalm. Yet, each message and listed scripture speaks to us differently, as detailed in the different comments written.
Lord God, I am thankful for the authors who lead this devotional Bible study with scriptures that I would not choose for myself and for your message to me in each. In Jesus's name, Amen.

Written by Dennis,

How sad you do not hear the poetry of God's word in a different cadence. If all poets sounded the same, indifference and boredom would close the ears of the listener!
I find delight in Hebrews and find the words presented differently as Shakespeare to Wolf!

The Episcopal Church's Articles of Religion, reprinted in the back of our Book of Common Prayer state, "Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation..."
To me this means all things necessary for all people at all times. What a blessing. Alleluia!
But, I do need help. I need my brothers and sisters to help me read, learn and understand.

Written by Mary kier,

Sometimes at different times of our lives certain passages pop out to us. I think all scriptures whether more direct or more poetic have a place depending on our stage of spiritual growth.
