Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
1 Samuel 3:1-21. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.
These words preface God's call to Samuel which Samuel does hear, because he answers, but he does not know it is God. God must call four times and Eli must make the suggestion before Samuel recognizes the voice as God's. Apparently, hearing God is not simply a matter of hearing from God.
There was a time when I was recording prayers in my journal. My husband, suffering from early dementia, needed care, but I worked full-time. We lived on the second floor; he could no longer manage stairs. My recorded prayer: "Help!" The next morning while I hung out clothes, I mulled over my options. Put our house on the market and move. Where? "Institutionalize" my spouse and finance it. How? As I mulled, I remembered my daughter's interest in living in our two-family house. Had she been serious? At the same time came the courage to consider working part-time. The solutions fit (and worked), but God would have received no credit had I not looked in my journal that night. My prayer had been answered; it was God's voice I had heard, not mine.
