Colossians 3:1-11. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
I once served in an African country where corruption saturated every aspect of life (except, so far as I could tell, the church). There was plenty of money, but it remained in a few hands. The result was widespread poverty and disease. When I asked how they coped, my African friends typically said, "We do not think about things on this earth, but about the things that are above. We trust the Lord to deal with it."
"You are right," I replied. "People obsessed with worldly things--money, materialism, power--are in spiritual trouble. I see that in my own country, despite the outward piety of many Americans. But people so fixated on heaven that they ignore the world around them are in trouble as well. 'Those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen' (1 John 4:20). Yes, the Lord will deal with corruption, but perhaps he intends to deal with it through you."
I was reminded of a line from Christopher Rex Bryan: "To attempt to be open to God and closed to our fellows is to drive uphill with all our brakes on."
