Matthew 16:13-20. Who do you say that I am?

Jesus posed that question to Peter in Caesarea Philippi, and Peter said, “You are the eschatological ground of being; the kerygma manifested in conflict and decision in the humanizing process of the space-time continuum.” And Jesus said, “What?”

No, not really—that’s not what Peter said. But I’m tempted to answer something like that. I’ve read gobs of theological books and am very comfortable with intellectual gobbledygook. That sort of talk is detached from where people live. It’s all in the head and means nothing except to fellow intellectuals. But the main problem with intellectualizing Jesus is that people like me can be so comfortable talking that way that it doesn’t challenge us. It calls for no decision, no sacrifice, no risk, no change.

What Peter actually said in response was: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Even he didn’t know the full import of his confession that day in Caesarea Philippi, and there would be some waffling in the days to come. But that day was the beginning of real discipleship for Peter. He would soon learn the full meaning of his confession, and in the end, he would follow his Lord the whole distance. Are you willing to follow Jesus the whole distance?

Yes, I Am Willing To Follow Jesus!

Nov 11, 2011 at 5:28 am

Written by emeline,

For all the good that Jesus did and is still doing in my life today, I am a willing follower. He leads, guides and directs my path. He demonstrates the sharing of compassion, love and goodness, especially to the orphans, widows (like me), and to the distressed and downtrodden. To follow Jesus is to live a life that prepares me to live with Him eternally. Praise be unto God for giving us His one and only Son!

Written by Bonnie,

Upon meeting Jesus, there is nothing else to say but, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Written by Janet,

I came home from church one day and told my husband "I learned all about the exegesis of the Venerable Bede today", to which I received a very blank stare in return. Religion is man' s imperfect way of reaching for the perfection of God, but Jesus Christ is God's perfect way of reaching for the imperfection of man. We should all try and do the same.

Written by Olive,

Thank you, Janet. I immediately wanted to say to the writers question, "I cannot do otherwise." Then thought, "I often slip backwards until He catches me." You have given me the words I needed beyond just "Help!"
