1 Peter 3:13-4:6. Baptism...now saves you.
The closer we get to Advent the more pressing the scripture readings become. They remind us to trust in God and to be faithful even in the midst of suffering.
Peter's remark about baptism strikes me in a new way. For what I did not know two days ago, I now know: our daughter is pregnant. Amid great rejoicing for us at this news is the realization that no matter how tough the world seems, the prospect of new life softens it. Who knew the thought of being a grandparent could be so life affirming?
So no shopping for us today: our daughter and son-in-law, as well as our son, bring box after box down from the attic in search of christening gowns worn on their baptism days. Every box opened brings some new delight, some rediscovered memory, and laughter. Stories are told about stuffed animals and games, LEGO sets and comic books, report cards and birthday cards--a veritable feast of memories.
We did not locate the gowns, but we will in time. Instead we discovered something far more precious: the love that binds us one to another, through the great goodness of God, is the only thing that really matters. And it is baptism that both saves us from ourselves and unites us to God forever.
