FRIDAY, October 23 Saint James of Jerusalem

Matthew 13:54-58. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these deeds of power? Is not this the carpenter's son?"

Our modern culture struggles to move from reliance on printed information to reliance on the Internet's miracles of knowledge storage and dissemination. Online encyclopedias, for instance, need not sacrifice length in one entry for the sake of other entries, thanks to immense electronic storage capacity.

Human inability to break free of restrictive ways of thinking also traps us when we see God at work. The people of Jesus' hometown questioned how he could be so wise. They couldn't comprehend what God could do in the life of someone they had known and categorized comfortably for years.

We also view love through limited human experience. Since human hearts usually "love" with some ingredient of debt or manipulation, we tend to limit love for one person so that we have "enough" to love the next person. But we need to think beyond limits. No human ever dreamed a world of informa-tion would be available at the click of a button.

No human ever dreamed the power of God could be available at the utterance of the simplest prayer.
