Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

FRIDAY, October 29 (James Hannington and his Companions)

Psalm 51. For behold, you look for truth deep within me…Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure; wash me, and I shall be clean indeed...Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

A saint is not a person who has achieved perfect goodness, but one who has come to desire it with his whole heart. Is the righteousness of God your chief desire? If so, you will not be one of those who object to the General Confession in the [1928] Book of Common Prayer. You will find it helpful to join with others in saying “there is no health in us.”

Humanity’s great tragedy is willful isolation from God. Whatever separates us from our God, making our hearts cold and our wills unresponsive, is sin. In the confession, we admit our need for God. We ask God to show us our sins of commission and omission, that we may turn away from them and come into blessed union with God. Why should you shrink from referring to yourself as a miserable sinner when it is sin, and only sin, that makes you miserable? God alone, through Christ, has the power to purify us, provided we desire to be cleansed. Try saying over and over during each day, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” (1938)

Written by Gaye Anne McWade,

I'm grateful for the gift of confession which softens my self-defensive grip and my heart's eyes can open to see His mercy. Gratitude makes my world beautiful!
