Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

FRIDAY, October 9 (Robert Grosseteste)

Psalm 142. I cry out to you, O LORD; I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living."...Bring me out of my prison, that I may give thanks to your Name.

Though many thought the "peace sign" originated from the shape of a dove or a chicken track, the sign actually came from the symbols for nuclear disarmament.

Too often in our world we misread signs of peace. We fall into believing that weapons are required for peace; we even name missiles "peacekeepers." Regarding God's peace, though, we need to speak not of picking up weapons, but of putting them down. Just as the peace symbol spoke of nuclear disarmament, God's peace speaks of a place in which we need no weapons because we know that God transcends whatever chaos human beings can create.

Peace comes to the human heart when we trust God as our "refuge" and our "portion in the land of the living." We live liberated lives of peace when we pray to God not to let us win in this world, but to lift us above this world into the divine eternal presence.

Dependence on God doesn't mean we win all the wars. It means that we trust God enough to lay down the weapons.

Written by The Rev. Frank Young,

Very timely commentary with the breaking news of Pres. Obama's selection for the Nobel Peace Prize. It helps to think what peace means and what that particular honor for our national leader means for us as citizens who must also work for peace. One of God's coincidences?

All that is well and good, I am proud of Pres. Obama and the honor bestowed on him, but there are still many who are out to see him fail. Our prayers for peace need to be often and include those who would rather keep us in turmoil rather than peacful recovery.
