Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
John 9:18-41. Jesus said [to the man who had been born blind], “You have seen [the Son of Man], and the one speaking with you is he.”
We cannot know the historical Jesus, and it was not the intention of the gospel writers to present him to us. Their message was the Good News of a God who is our contemporary, the living Lord of our lives. Through the message of these gospel writers written long ago, our Lord speaks to us in the here and now.
Furthermore, this living Lord uses other means, in addition to scripture, to reach us with the Word for our time. We cannot prescribe how or where God will speak to us. We cannot restrict God’s movement or message. We can only be attentive to events and persons around us and faithful in our worship and study. If we are attentive, we, like so many before us, may find that this living Lord is much closer than we have ever imagined. The gospel writers saw Jesus and spoke with him. And, through their writings and other means, we too have seen him and have heard his voice speaking with us. (1983)
Every creature is a divine word because it proclaims God.

Do we in our human understanding appreciate how often we live as if the Lord Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross was, in our terms, extravagant...i.e. more costly than necessary, exceeding the limits of reason, lacking moderation etc? So, if we go to far away places out of an interior leading of the Holy Spirit to touch the lives of even one soul for the Living Christ, that is surely extravagant by the world's standards and understanding yet it seems to follow the Lord's example and teaching as to what the true importance of this life is..the awakening of the heart and soul to God.
