MONDAY, August 16 Saint Mary the Virgin (tr.)

Psalm 34. Taste and see that the Lord is good.

On a retreat, we were given a small pocket notebook titled “Senses Census.” The retreat leader then sent us out on a walk to collect and record what we saw, heard, felt, smelled, and tasted.

As I crunched over the gravel walkway leading to the trail, I heard a meadowlark singing and felt the wind against my cheek. The taste of the lunch dessert, a fresh lemon meringue pie, lingered in my mouth. Blooming cactus complemented the smell of sage, as did the sound of thunder with the darkening skies overhead. Workers chattered and laughed, listening to radio music as they put stucco on a house. An American flag fluttered on a pole. I visually explored the undulating red rock formations of the Colorado National Monument that stretched across the horizon, and stood for a long while watching the light changing across its surfaces. In the distance, I heard a bell ringing, indicating it was time to come back in and share our census with the other retreatants.

The psalmist suggests that we can know God through our senses—and not only that we can know God, but we can know that God is good. (2006)

I agree. We can know God by acknowledging His amazing, abundant creation.

The author is correct. Actually the use of Psalm 34 at communion time is rooted in a pun in the Greek text of the Psalm. "Taste and see that the Lord is sweet" The Greek word for sweet sounds like the Greek word for Christ. Chrestos = Christos. It's just away of inviting to enter the mystery of Christ through out senses,as wellas the mind.

Written by Sam Dowding,

Acknowledging that all creation is God's, it will take a very long time for us to see the good in creation activity such as the recent floods in Pakistan, the January earthquake in Haiti, or the prolonged volcanic activity (1996-today) in Montserrat. For every wonder of creation that we "taste", something has had to die in order for that wonder to emerge. And the dying part always saddens us, as in the 3 instances cited above: major devastation and death, which will lead, as we know God intends, to new life and wonderful creation for us to 'taste and see that He is good'.
God reveals himself through your senses

Written by David M,

A priest friend once told me that if I really wanted to experience God, I could do so through all my senses. Now I know that I can taste him in my wine, see him in the sunset, feel him in a cooling breeze, smell him in my garden, and hear him in my wife's voice. Thank you, Dear Lord, for your revealing presence.
