MONDAY, December 28 Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist (tr.)

John 21:19b-24. This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true.

The Gospel of John and the three short epistles that bear his name were clearly written by the same person, but was it John the son of Zebedee, the disciple we commemorate today, usually identified as "the disciple whom Jesus loved?" Possibly so. Scholars debate that point, but in none of these four New Testament works does the author give his name.

He refers to himself often in the epistles (though never identifying himself), speaking of his reasons for writing and what he hopes for his readers. But in the gospel he remains virtually invisible, probably on purpose, referring to himself only in the final two verses, first to say that we can trust what he says because he was there and knows what he's talking about, and then with a sly little "I suppose" when alluding to the many marvels and mysteries he was unable to include in this short piece of writing. John--or whoever it was--sought to stay out of sight because he wanted to direct our attention to Jesus, the Word made flesh. He knew it was not about him. It's not about us, either. It's always about Jesus.

Written by Don Gaines,

Since the gospel of John was not written until about 90 CE it lies somewhere between slim and none that the author of that gospel had any personal experience of Jesus.
Truly. Many have a story, about a relationship with Jesus,

Written by Frederick Wright,

Oh, how the love of Jesus has expanded to many hearts and because of the the stories or testimonies of people that have experience the love of our Christ by the Holy Spirit of Charity. we have a being of an understanding with hope to have an eternal relationship with the Good of our Father in Heaven, yes, for now, a gimps of His Love through humanity and the actions of Jesus and his teachings and God's People or Israel, for the story is still being taught and lived with hopes of perfection within His Word of Love, as we are molded into an image of the Father or Jesus our Christ as we know him.

My prayer is to know Him more and more and for more to be molded into His Love of a perfect relationship, within His Loving Word or the Son of God, Jesus the Christ.

Amen

Marco, we will do our best when we return to our office next week to eliminate spammers and others trying to sell something from the Forward Movement website. I apologize for this having happened in the past few days. Thanks to both Don and Frederick for your comments. According to my reading, Don is right about the date of St. John's Gospel. It is unlikely (though possible) that the apostle could have written it as we now have it. Many scholars feel, though, that it includes chunks of material from the apostle, including these concluding verses. In any case, the Gospel and Epistles of John were included in the Christian scriptures because the early church felt they accurately expressed the church's corporate memory of Jesus. God bless you all (including spammers, though please stop posting your messages on this site) and give you a Happy New Year.
