Mark 11:1-11. Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!
It was Palm Sunday and a visiting bishop was among us. The children were waving freshly cut palm fronds. There was great enthusiasm since the children would be part of the procession at the beginning of worship. There would be shouts of “Hosanna!” as we remembered Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. As the procession began to move forward, the bishop noticed a little child trying to hold her own among the crowd of boisterous children. The bishop held out a hand. The religious leader and the little child walked together at the head of the procession.
There was no humble donkey to ride on, as on the first Palm Sunday. But the incident stays fresh in my memory. The bishop hand-in-hand with a little child waving a palm brought home to me the humility of Jesus, who came in peace to Jerusalem. It brought home to me that today we are called to walk humbly in his way of love—vulnerable and caring for the vulnerable.
