Mark 1:1-13. The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Before the gospel records were put into writing, there existed an oral tradition in the churches. Parts of the gospels seem to have been recited--especially the sayings of Jesus--during gatherings for worship. At some point--probably soon after a great fire in Rome--a man called Mark was moved to put the mighty works of God into a short story.

Thus, by the year 65 A.D. we have documented evidence written during the lifetime of some of the witnesses of the events described. These stated facts could have been challenged: the fact that they were not attests to their truth, however strange and mysterious it may seem at times.

The term "gospel of Jesus Christ" means the good news about our human salvation because of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus; it means the good news as taught and proclaimed by Jesus. In Mark's account there is a great sense of urgency revealed in a leader keen to bring God's saving grace quickly into the world--while there is yet time. (1966)

So shall God's will on earth be done, new lamps be lit, new tasks begun, and the whole church at last be one.

Written by Philip M. McGhee,

One critical point could be raised here. Most of the Gospel message was already proclaimed before the Gospel of Mark was written and largely through the Pauline corpus, most of which had be written before 65A.D. The Church was intellectually and psychologically conscious and informed of the Gospel message before the Gospels were written. (James may also antidate the Gospels).
