Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. MONDAY, January 11

John 1:1-18. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness...he came to testify to the light.

Being a Christian here can be hard; there are still many who do not like Christians or the gospel. As in the first century, when Christianity was spreading like wildfire and upsetting societal apple carts, so it is spreading in Sudan today. And just as many apple carts are upset, changing how people think about peace, justice and reconciliation, and to which tribe each person belongs.

The gospel is spreading because so many are willing to be witnesses and to testify to God's light. There is no reticence here; the Good News cannot be contained. Youths gather to sing songs praising God; women leave their little tea shacks to attend Bible studies; evangelism groups go compound to compound to tell the story of the man named Jesus and to invite listeners to believe in the God who believes in them.

Seeing people living their lives this boldly empowers me to do the same, to proclaim the gospel not only in how I live, but to talk about my faith openly, and to offer God's love in ever bolder ways.

John testified and people believed; the Sudanese testify, and people believe.

Written by Steve Doutt,

Alleluia, thank you. God give me the courage today to speak openly of your love for me. Interestingly, there are many Christians who do not like other Christians.

Amen, and I do agree that we need to do that more often. I think that one way we can show this best is through trusting and believing the miracles that God brings and shows us everyday.

Written by Marco of San Francisco,

I think we teach by being living examples...
Nothing we can read or hear will teach others of God's love for us, as the
active, living example we show to others of God's love for us.
I am a retired organist-choirmaster and my organ studies at universities were never
as good or complete as studies with church organists who taught by being living examples of what they taught.

Written by JuliaB,

I too pray for the courage to speak and live my faith "out loud."

I'm not sure we as Christians are always called to "like" each other, just as siblings, parents and their children (especially teenagers) don't always like each other. We are always called, however, to see Christ in one another and respond with His love. More difficult perhaps, but I don't think there is any greater witness.

Written by Lauren Stanley,

I think all of you are right - we need to speak more openly of our faith, and remember that nothing can be allowed to get in that way. It's not always easy; there are many who don't want to hear it, and many others who are opposed to God's call for love. But I really think we don't have a choice in this. How we each do this is not important; but if we don't all engage in shouting it from the mountaintops, in one way or another, how can we pass on the faith once received?

Dear Friends: I've just been reminded to point out that I indeed am the author of these writings ... I hadn't thought to do that before. I still agree with all of what you have said, and deeply appreciate your thoughtful responses. Blessings and peace, Lauren
