MONDAY, July 13

Mark 1:29-45. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve.

Cynical woman that I am, I had previously read this passage and imagined a group of hungry men coming into a house where a sick woman can't even take a nap. But now I consider the double gift she is given. Her fever goes away, and she gets to provide hospitality to Jesus!

I returned from a church meeting one afternoon with a long to-do list rolling in my head. One of my husband's friends had shown up to help him in the barn, and I was glad because I could delve into my remodeling chores. I waved to them and headed to the house to change into work clothes.

But there on our patio sat the man's wife, smiling sweetly. With inward reluctance, I sat with her and began to visit. She asked about our house plans and shared that she had been restoring an old home, too. Soon my chore list evaporated. She and I drove to the closest joint to buy burgers for supper. The four of us sat around the patio table and talked until the locusts hummed at the moon. I don't remember what was on the to-do list, but I'll always remember the gift of  hospitality with this couple.

Written by Gordon Worden,

I miss the link you used to provide for morning prayer. I was a very useful link and I often used it but can't see it on your new website.

Do you know how I can find this site that use the Episcopal prayer book for daily Morning Prayer?

Thank you.

God Bless,
Gord

Written by Michael,

The first thing that came to mind after I read this devotional was the story of Lot and the Angels at Sodom. That immediately led me to think of this passage.

Hebrews 13

1Let brotherly love continue.

2Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

In today's culture or at least what we so often think of as today's culture it's hard to be the neighbor or the good Samaritan, but it's always a good passage to keep in mind.

Written by Allan Watts,

I hate to sound like a curmudgeon, but I am SICK of hearing about this house!

Are we bragging here or meditating?

It does, however, bring to mind one of my favorite sayings of St. Augustine: "My house is a narrow house; O Lord make it wide. My house is in ruins, O Lord build it up!"

Sorry about the curmudgeon bit, but it is just one of those days.
Where are the day by day readings for week of July 8 thru 12?
