MONDAY, July 19 (Macrina)

Romans 13:8-14. The night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

These were the words that led the great Saint Augustine to Christ. He had been a wayward youth. His mother, Monica, had prayed for him and when she heard about his conversion she said, "My hopes in this world are satisfied."

The old life fell from Augustine as an old garment when he put on the new life in Christ. His life had had no unity. He knew the gospel, yet he lived apart from Christ. He was restless and could not rest till he had found the peace of Christ. Finally, his divided heart found peace.

The wall of partition between his false self and his true self had broken down, and Christ now filled Augustine's entire life. We hear him saying, "I could not exist, therefore my God, were it not for your existence in me."

As for Augustine, so for us. (1948)

Written by Lois,

Every day I read this and it comes closer to home. I have been partying way to much . It has been fun. But I want to know the Lord more and being sober is a good way to be. I do want Jesus to run my life.
Run or Ruin

Written by Sue,

I read the first comment to be " I do want Jesus to ruin my life". Is there a point - when after years of deep, unquestioning faith - one wonders if belief ruins things. When one beseeches a God who remain silent and remote?
