Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. MONDAY, July 25 Saint James

Matthew 20:20-28. The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.

The mother of James and John asked Jesus to declare that her sons would sit alongside Jesus in his kingdom. Jesus responded that they didn’t know what they were asking. “Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” he questioned. They answered, “We are able.” When the other ten heard about this and were angry, Jesus explained the servanthood and sacrifice required of leaders, that they are to give their lives.

Physicians come to mind as examples of leaders and servants. A surgeon recounted how he had to think of himself as a god when he was a student, in order to have the nerve to take a scalpel and make the first cut. To be a great doctor he had to learn humility: that he didn’t know everything, needed colleagues and continuing education, and must listen to the patient who might be trying to reveal something important.

Whatever our jobs, as Christians we seek more than status or paycheck. We are called to serve.

A Life of Service

Jul 25, 2011 at 6:11 am

Written by emeline,

Service and humility go hand in hand. We must recognize that Jesus, in all His humility, brought healing, grace and mercy to a sin sick world. We are called to a life of humility so that God's grace, mercy and love may reign with us. Thanks to the Writer of today's meditation for this insight into humilty.

Written by Barbara Summers,

The writer of this month's devotionals makes interesting analogies. My son is a physician who hesitates to give me, an adult, too much medical advice, since he is a pediatrician. I hope that he possesses the right combination of confidence and humility.

Written by Mary kier,

It is good to know no matter what we do in for our occupation, we can do it with humility and as a service to others. If we let him, God can direct our words and actions.
