MONDAY, July 27 (William Reed Huntington)

Psalm 57. I myself will waken the dawn.

Never have I been a morning person. But when our new priest announced that daily Morning Prayer would begin at our church, I vowed to go in support of his efforts.

Had I read about this in the bulletin, I would have decided against it. After all, this would mean getting up by 5:30 a.m. every day to walk the dogs, get ready for work, and leave the country by 7:00 for the drive to church by 7:30.

In all my years, getting up by 7:00 a.m. had been a struggle. But my vow to attend this new service regularly was so quick and so public that I had to keep it.

Now, some three years later, I waken the dawn with God. My conversation with him begins as I step out on the porch with two dogs. As the shadowy darkness retreats on one side of the road, I see the first radiant glimpse of peachy blue skies on the other.  I see wildlife darting home after a night of grazing. I hear birds chirping in thanksgiving after a night of surviving predators.

And I'm all the more aware that this "night person" is functioning that early only because God is with me, a powerful thought that keeps me all day.

Written by Beth Stefanelli,

Wow, I so relate to what you said. For the past 6 months I have been attending a morning prayer session. At first the thought of getting up so early, preparing for work and then attending a group was unthinkable. Now, I am blessed throughout the day knowing that I can accomplish anything because He is with me! Thanks for reminding me why I do this! Bethsmilies/smiley.gif

Written by Mark,

I never get up as early as I needed to this morning, and today's scripture and your writing "fit" so well. Thanks.

A local pastor invited me on a retreat to Our Lady of Gethsemani in Trappist, KY. There I learned this lesson. Thank you for taking me back there through this devotion.

God is in the Night, Too

Jul 27, 2009 at 6:35 pm

Written by Mark,

All too often, I am encouraged to rise early to be with God in the stillness of the morning. I am not a morning person. I have tried many times to force this upon myself. As I grow older, instead of trying to reshape myself into an early riser only to drag through the rest of the day, I have decided to embrace my inner night owl. I now thank God for the quite stillness in the night hours, when most of my community are sleeping. Like the early morning, it is a time ripe for reflection and meditation. And I have to believe God is there at night as much as he is in the morning.

Written by Kathleen Thompson,

Mark, I agree with you. I am an "owl," not a "lark," and the early morning just doesn't work for me. I am focused on getting ready for work and cannot concentrate on prayer as I should. My devotional reading time is late at night, but I use my drive to work to pray for guidance for the day, for my children's health and safety, for my church, my community and another other pressing concerns. If I'm finished praying before I arrive at the office, I say (all of this aloud) the Lord's Prayer or the 23rd Psalm. I am usually saying Amen as I pull into the parking lot. Works for me!
