MONDAY, July 6

Psalm 3. I call aloud upon the LORD, and he answers me from his holy hill.

Our country surroundings are new for my husband and me. After living in the city for two decades, we found a small acreage with an older home about  fifteen miles outside the city.

Our home is now a reprieve from our hectic occupations in the city, but it took a lot of elbow grease--and an evening of song--to make it so.

For a month before moving, we scraped, taped, and painted nightly. One evening, I remained alone to finish painting while my husband returned to chores at our city house. Soon my solitude was broken by a tapping at the window. What unknown creature was peering at me? Eerie stories from youthful slumber parties came to mind. I got scared. I began loudly singing hymns, chanting the Jubilate, and humming sacred tunes whose words I could not remember. I was thankful I knew songs to comfort me.

When the painting was done, I planned my dash to the car. While I was locking the door, I noticed June bugs around the window where the light had shone. My eyes opened to the understanding that country creatures would now share my evensong.

My favorite psalm

Written by Tim Bell,

Psalm 3 is truly one of my favorites. I, too, have used sacred song to calm myself or to rejoice.

Pastor Tim Keller has a wonderful sermon on Psalm 3 at the link below. The download is free. It helped me greatly several years ago when I was living in fear.
