MONDAY, June 21

Romans 3:21-31. For there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

Most of us are not notorious evil-doers, but it may come as a shock to realize that we are not perfect. "Oh, I'm not a sinner--sinners commit murder and cheat and are slimy characters," we may say. But then we are not Jesus either--he was perfect. And yes, we have sinned, and then probably within seconds of having our sins forgiven in church on Sunday morning, have sinned once again in thought, mind, and maybe even deed.

Receiving the gift of grace, bought for us through the death of Jesus Christ, is often difficult. In giving a gift we are in control; in receiving a gift someone else is. Poor receivers, we are often loath to accept a gift, a compliment, even love itself. Grace is a free gift. We do nothing to earn it--we can't--with good works, money, or success. We do have to ask for it--and for many of us it is difficult to know even that we need it. There is such a thing as a "free lunch." It is called the grace of God. (2004)

Written by Stephen,

I can relate to this. After I returned to church after 15 years away, I like many in my new found piety (and renewal) hung a Cross from my cars rear-view mirror. The same mirror through which I continued to watch for tailgater's with baited breath as I slammed on my breaks just to show them how dangerous tailgating can be. I also continued to use what I call my driving finger (the middle one) to give friendly "Christian" advice to other drivers. I decided to take down my rear view mirror Cross and wait for some grace, which came in the form of my loving wife's corrections. She would like to say how many people I know every where we drive. I know them by name, "jerkola, a--hole, dip---t etc. The Cross in my car didn't help much. In fact I am sure at times it did damage to Christiandom to have it displayed as I assaulted my neighbor. Thanks be to God, I have changed. I need more Grace.

Written by CDL,

Thank you for your comment above. I found myself smiling at your description of your former "style" of driving a car! I live in a city that is notorious for its rude drivers and I try my best not to be guilty of that.
But I have lots of other shortcomings, and today's meditation reminded me of that as well.

Written by Pamela,

Stephen's story is hilarious, yet underscores the point of today's meditation of how easy it is for us to revert to sinful bad behavior while still claiming to be Christians. That is why we all must do daily what the Benedictine monks say their life is about: falling down and getting back up, falling down and getting back up. When I fall down, may the grace of God help me get back up.
