Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

MONDAY, June 28 (Irenaeus)

Matthew 21:12-22. Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who were selling and buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. He said to them, "It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer'; but you are making it a den of robbers."

Bible reading can be a drab and uninteresting experience, but not if we read in an understanding manner. For example, read the story of the cleansing of the Temple. As I read that story recently these words came to life and jumped out at me and seemed to say: "This is for you. Take it and use it." Here are the words: "My house shall be called a house of prayer."

Jesus was referring to the Temple, to be sure; but we can apply it to ourselves. My house, my home--is it a place of prayer? Is there a consciousness of God's presence as we live together as a family? Or has the day already been spoiled because selfish desires have come in to push aside God's love, which can be expressed only in our love for each other?

Three signs of a house of prayer:
There is thoughtfulness each for the other.
There is temper control because God is in control.
There is infinite patience.

Written by Brenda Dennis,

I understand that we are the "house or temple" for the Holy Spirit. Not until today have I though much about "robbers" in this scripture, which we all know want a bargain or to take a short cut to getting something by "robbing you blind" or perhaps even giving you false advertising. By desire I am contemplative with God - my conversations with Him keep me in conversation so I stay focused pretty much with my study too. If I didn't practice those disciplines I would have a tough time warding off those "robbers". LOL!

Written by Pamela,

This passage and meditation reminds me as well of Jesus' warning about "defilement"; that what comes out of a person defiles him/her more than what one puts into him/her. Whether it is our houses of worship or our bodily self, we have to be careful that they are indeed temples of God.

a house of prayer

Written by Nora,

By extension, you can make your workplace a "house of prayer". Thoughtfulness for your coworkers, patience with yourself, your work, and with others, and "biting your tongue" when you feel annoyed. This is how you can feel at peace - by being mindful of God's prescence, whether you're at church, at home, or out in the world.
