Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
John 21:15-19. When you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.
Today we commemorate two disciples--Saint Peter and Saint Paul. What would they think of being remembered almost as one, those two who so often disagreed? It's sort of like pairing the staunchest of fundamentalists with our first openly homosexual bishop.
When I was an active alcoholic, I dreaded the thought of old age because in a nursing home I would have to face my alcoholism. The thought of being the only one drinking in a community embarrassed me, though not enough to make me stop.
In recovery I no longer have that fear. Today, having eliminated meat from my diet of whole grains, I wonder what I will eat in the nursing home. Perhaps by then "skilled nursing" facilities will have discovered vegetarianism.
Few people look forward to growing old, but it is our last chance to transfer our faith in our own control to its proper object--God. Hopefully total dependence will succeed where all else has failed.
Old men ought to be explorers.
