John 12:1-11. You do not always have me.
How frightening are the demands Jesus makes of us! There is no halfway when we respond to the call of Jesus. The call is to total discipleship and service.
Today when we speak of giving, we mean a monetary policy; we practice stewardship, we tithe. But when we talk of Jesus giving himself, we mean he gave himself totally, even to death.

Martha waited on Jesus at the table. Mary anointed him with an expensive ointment. Both Martha and Mary gave Jesus what was of great value: service and worship (which are the same word in Greek). Through unselfish service and constant worship, the presence of the Lord is acknowledged. The Christian is called to serve and worship the living God.
Jesus is "the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God" (Hebrews 12:2). (1980)
