Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Luke 9:18-27. He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
The correct answer to that question slips easily off my practiced Christian tongue: "You are the Christ, the Son of God, the Savior of the world." Everybody knows that, or at least the people I hang with do. We don't even have to think about the answer.
That's the problem with us long-time Christians--we know the answers, but we don't often think about them. What exactly does it mean, Jesus, to say that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the Savior of the world? Never mind defining the terms; I could look that up. What does it mean in my life? How would things be different for me if I said you were a great teacher, a really fine person, an idealistic stargazer, an insightful preacher, or a lunatic?
Actually, I don't think you care what I say. You care what I do. If I read a few verses further, I get the picture of what it will mean if I live the right answer--and I don't like that picture. It's not what I had in mind when I signed up with you, Jesus. So now what do I do? What do you think I should do, Jesus?
