MONDAY, May 24 (Jackson Kemper)

Psalm 25. To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

I was the despair of my mathematics teacher at school. The whole business eluded me. Treated as backward and stupid by the schoolmaster, I feared and hated the subject and him.

Then one day a new teacher arrived who had a blessed and joyful qualification for all schoolboys: he was a cricketer of renown. We admired him for his athletic prowess. And for something else as well: he loved teaching as much as he loved cricket. I responded to his freshness of approach, his joy. I learned fast. Geometry and algebra opened their secrets to me. It was fun, because of him. Joy communicates itself, and the soul will learn from a joyful-hearted teacher. True it is that perfect love casts out fear, and the loving heart of the Lord injects its joy to the anxious, fearful believer, strengthening with forgiveness, with new hope, with fresh desire to love and serve, with confidence so that the soul shall dwell at ease. (1974)

Father-like he tends and spares us;
well our feeble frame he knows;
in his hand he gently bears us,
rescues us from all our foes.

Written by Barbara Summers,

Great message! This experience reminds me of my husband's experience at English boarding school during the 1950s, when he was kicked out of choir for being tone-deaf. I'm thankful God doesn't kick us out of His kingdom for our shortcomings.

Written by Sam Dowding,

In the sixties, at my Catholic High School in one of the colonies, the English Teacher was an Irish priest. He was also a black-belt judo expert, and started the first judo club in a high school back then. He truly embodied this phrase from the reflection - Joy communicates itself, and the soul will learn from a joyful-hearted teacher. I am so happy and grateful that God chooses and equips His servants for each purpose so well. Today’s reflection is a timely reminder to me of God’s grace.

Written by Sheri Christi,

I wonder what things people admired in Jesus? I wonder if he was joyous? The gospels report him at various dinner parties, so he must have had winning qualities that people enjoyed. He may also have been strong and athletic since he was a carpenter. There aren't any stories of him wrestling with the disciples, but that doesn't mean that he didn't. After all, God wrestled with Abraham.
