MONDAY, May 30 Rogation Day Memorial Day

Deuteronomy 8:1-10. For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, with flowing streams and with springs and underground waters.

The Jordan River is in trouble. Increased settlements on the West Bank, legal and illegal, and increased demands by a burgeoning and contentious population have put an immense strain on the Jordan watershed, exacerbated by the repercussions of long years of  Israeli occupation and Palestinian resistance. The situation provides a troubling and ironic commentary on  the Deuteronomist’s vision of the promised land, a good land of brooks and springs. It will be an ecological and human disaster if things continue as they are.

Still the beauty of the land endures. One of my seminary students returned from his first visit to Israel/Palestine (his first time out of the country, his first time on an airplane). His group spent a few days in Galilee, which he described in lavish terms as a place of green beauty and teeming fruitfulness. No wonder, he said to me in awe, that after his resurrection Jesus told his friends to meet him in Galilee.

Pray for peace in that troubled place. And pray too for the healing of Jordan’s waters.

As I pray for the peace of Jerusalem today I will examine myself for any act or omission of mine that adds fuel to the fire.

Steve, I do so appreciate your comment to examine yourself in prayer. A good reminder for all of us. Blessings.
Why the Jordan River is a trickle

Jun 01, 2011 at 10:56 am

Written by Jennifer Read,

This meditation displays a lack of understanding of the facts about the Jordan River. Its depleted state has little or nothing to do with the inhabitants of the West Bank, Jewish or Arab. Much water that would flow into the Jordan is diverted into irrigation of farmlands in Jordan. The Sea of Galilee is the source of much of the drinking water for the entire nation of Israel. The aquifer has been further depleted by several years of drought. The meditation, therefore, comes across as ignorant and an excuse to bash Israel for a state of affairs that many Israeli citizens, including me, are deeply troubled by. I am deeply offended.
