Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Luke 4:14-30. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.
After his resurrection, Jesus suddenly appeared in the midst of his disciples who were in a house to which the doors had been closed. Physical structures were no obstacle for him.
Neither was an angry crowd. In today’s reading, Jesus’ hometown crowd has turned against him. He had spoken hard truths to his fellow Galileans, and for his pains they drove him out of town, threatening his life, leading him to the edge of a cliff with every intention of pitching him off. There was something about him that made them stop short, drop the stones they had aimed at his head, and stare dumbfounded as he turned his back on the treacherous cliff and walked through the parting crowd, passing through the midst of them the way Moses and the Israelites had passed through the parting of the Red Sea.
They didn’t know it, but the befuddled leaders of that angry mob were given a fleeting glimpse of the Anointed One, the Son of Man whom not even death could cast down into the pit.
