MONDAY, November 16 (Margaret of Scotland)

1 Maccabees 3:1-24. But when they saw the army coming to meet them, they said to Judas, "How can we, few as we are, fight against so great and so strong a multitude?"

We will do things for others that we will not do for ourselves. Defending them is an example.
In the film Back to the Future, the character George McFly is a high school nerd. Bullies find him an easy target for their pranks and abuse. He never stands up for himself. But when Biff, the biggest bully of them all, starts to physically harass Lorraine, George takes a stand--for her. To his own amazement, he lands a punch that knocks Biff out cold. That one act transforms the movie and everyone involved.

Violence is not an answer to life's problems. But every once in a while it seems awfully appropriate to give a bully what he deserves.

Biblical precedence exists. David beans Goliath with a rock between the eyes, on behalf of his brothers and Israel, not for himself. Judas Maccabee reminds his brothers they must fight to protect their wives and children. Jesus intercedes for the woman about to be stoned to save her--and goes to the cross to save us.

Love takes many forms. Sometimes it requires a courageous stand.

Are these acts the same?

Written by Andrea,

What Jesus did was to step between someone and her would-be killers with the woman taken in adultery, and to step between us and our fate as sinners by giving his own life on the cross. This seems fundamentally different from killing someone else to save one's country...

Written by Maggi Weaver,

It exactly the same - think of the thousands of young men and women who have for over 200 years stood between the United States and bullies for would take ourfreedoms and think of the men and women who go out on our streets everyday to stand between us and criminals. They take the stand for sight and bear the burden and put their lives on the line in our place. May God keep them all.

Written by Guy,

Andrea, sorry, you got it wrong. Our women and men in service to our country stand up against wrong (eg Nazis who killed millions, 9/11 Al Qaeda who killed thousands and want to kill millions). Jesus stood up for right and stood up against wrong; so should we. Thanks to our service men and women.

Written by Sister Gloriamarie Amalfitano,

I would be very grateful if you would posting the meditation in black rather than grey. Black is easier to read. Thank you.

I like what Andrea said. Jesus was the perfect victim who did not create any victims. He shows us the way....

Written by Robert Myers,

I hate to be always negative, but I listened to the pod cast and was not happy. Perhaps you should be commended for having a young person do the reading. However, that person's reading is too much like that of many young people, expressionless and choppy. Would there not be a person experienced in reading who could work for you?

To Mr. Myers,
I haven't had the opportunity to listen to the podcast as yet. However, I believe that having a young person reading opens him/her to public speaking and with practise they should improve.

And I would also join with Mr. Myers in commending you for using young adults in yiur ministry.
