Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Matthew 4:18-22. As Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea--for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people." Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Though the gospel accounts vary, in all of them Andrew is considered the first apostle. In John's Gospel, Andrew is first seen as a disciple of John the Baptist, who points Andrew toward Jesus. "Look," he says to Andrew, "there is the lamb of God."
After his encounter with Jesus, Andrew rushes off to find his brother Simon. "We have found the Messiah," Andrew exclaims, and immediately brings Simon--who will become Peter--to Jesus.
The joy in finding and knowing Jesus is to be shared. Andrew could no more keep silent about that than a fisherman can drag a net full of fish ashore alone.
His example in sharing the good news of Jesus, and bringing others to know Jesus as well, is a model of evangelism we all do well to imitate.
We honor his apostolic life and work whenever we share the good news of God in Christ with others.
