MONDAY, October 18 Saint Luke

2 Timothy 4:5-13. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come...Do your best to come to me soon, for Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone...Only Luke is with me.

We are grateful for Luke the physician who set forth in his gospel the love and healing power of our Jesus Christ. Who could do it so sympathetically as one who himself ministered to the sick?

According to scholars, we are in all probability indebted to Luke not only for his unique gospel so rich in the story of our Lord’s birth, but also for the first Christian church history, the Acts of the Apostles.

How faithful, how earnest and untiring was this life to which we pay tribute today! Only the unfailing companion of Saint Paul could have known in such detail the story of the great missionary expansion of the early church.

This is a good day for us to resolve to be ambassadors of the love and healing power of Christ. (1944)
