MONDAY, September 13 (Cyprian)

Acts 15:36—16:5. The disagreement became so sharp that they parted company.

It is almost with relief that we read about such things in the New Testament: even saints like Paul and Barnabas fell out with each other. All was not perfect peace and harmony between them. Barnabas wanted to take Mark along on their missionary journey; Paul did not. So sharp were their differences that they could not continue to serve together. It reminds me of the verse attributed to Brigham Young:

To live with the saints in heaven
Is bliss and glory.
To live with the saints on earth
Is another story.

But notice that Paul and Barnabas both continued with their work for their one Master. Often when we Christians quarrel we take it out on God. Or because we don’t click with someone in our parish or denomination we stop supporting the church or find a different church. We need to see this as Paul and Barnabas saw it: we are not here to agree completely with one another, but to sink our differences, whatever they are, in our common service under our one Master. We must never let our quarrel with our brother or sister become a quarrel with God. (1962)

Written by irma,

Am I wrong or is there God, Church and church? I can quarrel with church and Church and still not quarrel with God, yes?

Irma, I would say that you can argue with church, but not Church. By "c"hurch I mean the institutions, denominations, canon law, etc., created by humans. By "C"hurch I mean the Body of Christ; Whom we join by by baptism, accepting Him into our heart, and confessing our faith to others. I suppose that I can argue with Jesus and the Holy Spirit and kick myself out of the Body of Christ; but, no human can kick me out of the Body of Christ, humans can only each other out of churches.

Written by Richard H Schmidt,

I agree with Steve, but sometimes it's hard to distinguish between "church" as Body of Christ and "church" as a collection of human beings, all fallible and potentially irritating, and of whom I am one. It keeps me humble to realize that some poeple find me hard to get along with but hang in there with me anyway. Our Lord commands us to love one another, and sometimes that's easier than at other times. Occasionally all I can do is to roll my eyes or grit my teeth and tolerate some other church member. Do you suppose that can be an act of love? I hope so.

Written by Don,

What would you think if at the end of each devotional where you have the daily reflection verses (ie psalms,OT and NT readings)you could "click" on each one and it would open to that verse...just a thought...God Bless

Written by Allen LaMontagne,

I'm with Steve except for the part about "kick myself out of the Body of Christ." I want to believe he doesn't mean that entirely. For as I understand Romans 8, nothing--not even Steve--"can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." Allne
