Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Acts 13:44-52. I have set you to be a light for the Gentiles, so that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.
Paul and Barnabas saw this verse spoken by the prophet Isaiah as an expression of the mission to which Christ had called them. They took seriously the imperative to speak out among people they did not know, far from home, wherever they were. When they encountered rejection and criticism in one place, they sought other places with more eager listeners.
We too must accept with joy the responsibility to speak the truth and to move beyond our comfortable places. We are to show our faith in God by our actions. This goes beyond our presence in church on Sundays. We must consider prayerfully ways to lift other people up. While ministering among them, we are to keep our own agendas fluid and flexible. Often we will be asked to give up certain ideas or plans for the greater good—ideas and plans that may be dear to us and that we may see as central. We may experience setbacks. But God calls us always to be open to what lies ahead, however it may surprise us. (1982)
