Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

SATURDAY, April 24

Matthew 4:18-25. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

Our Lord's ministry, from the beginning to the end, consisted of these three activities: teaching the truth of God; preaching the love of God; and healing sick bodies and souls by the power of God.

If, as we believe, the ministry of the church is the ministry of Christ himself, carried on through the faithful, it follows that the Christian ministry--his ministry--must continue to be this three-fold ministry of teaching, preaching, and healing. Our Lord's ministry in his incarnate life is the standard by which we are to judge the church's ministry.

Every ordained person and every layperson should be aware of this at all times. To serve Christ is to teach God's truth, to preach God's love, and to heal the sick by God's power. Anything else we do is secondary to that, or a false substitute for the ministry of the Lord himself to which he has called us. (1959)
