SATURDAY, August 13

Psalm 108:1-6(7-13). Wake up, my spirit; awake, lute and harp; I myself will waken the dawn.

I lived in Korea for fifteen years. Every morning at about 3:00 a.m. the Buddhist monasteries in Korea begin the day with the sound of a large bell calling all humans, a drum calling the animals, a cloud-shaped gong calling creatures of the air and a large log carved into the shape of a fish calling all water dwelling creatures. These sounds echo around the valleys and forests surrounding the temples, inviting all creatures to hear the chanting of the Buddha’s teaching.

Back in Australia at our Franciscan hermitage, we ring the angelus bell (somewhat later!) at 6:00 a.m. That sound too fills the bush around us and I hear nature stirring—birds, insects, the neighbor’s cows, a hopping wallaby, perhaps wind in the gum trees. The brothers begin to prepare for Morning Prayer. All are greeted with the sounds of this bell calling us to remember the good news of God becoming human and living among us.

This good news is not only for ourselves but to be proclaimed to all. Wake the dawn! Let all creation share in our praise of the God who dwells among us, intimately part of our breathing, our blood, our tissue, our waking and our rising.

Sometimes I wish that I could fly up on the dawn and follow it around the world.

Written by emeline,

As a child growing up in my native island, I can well recall the early morning crowing of the rooster. At such a young age, I thought it was a nuisance. As I matured, and listened to the discussions by my parents and persons in the community, I learned that the rooster's crowing was the wake up call because many people did not have clocks to tell the time in those days. It was also nature's way of reminding us that a new day had dawned. What a glorious feeling to know that we were waking up to life, health and peace! These moments are truly cherished. I would appreciate the crowing of a rooster at this stage in my lfe, but city life does not afford us such privilege!

Written by Mary kier,

So many of us awaken to jarring alarms. I once had an alarm that was birds tweeting. Awaking with joy and feeling God within and without would be my preference! I can hear those bells ringing through the coutyside. What a wonderful awakening to the day! I must change my alarm and infuse joy in the greeting of a new day. With God's help I can bring God's joy and love to others.

Written by Christopher John SSF,

Over the last few months I've been staying at our friary in Canterbury, in the U.K. Here I am usually woken by the rubbish collections at 5am - not the same as the sounds of nature. If I'd been writing this meditation now I might have thought about early morning sounds differently! Yet - this is the world in which we live and the sounds of people and machinery are as much part of the God-given world in which we live as the birdsongs.
