SATURDAY, December 26 Saint Stephen

Acts 6:8-7:2a, 51c-60. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him.

Stephen was the first Christian martyr. Historians estimate that beginning with the apostles, 70 million Christians have died for their faith, nearly two thirds of them within the last one hundred years. Christian martyrdom isn't abating. It's still happening. It's happening this year. I can give you names and locations.

Martyrs are created by people with power to lose. Most Christian martyrs have been killed by their governments, but churches have done it, too. It's because the faithful know that all power comes from God. The nation and church therefore do not come first for Christians--all nations and churches are accountable to God. Christians do not mistake any earthly power for God--emperors, presidents, bishops, and prelates are all accountable to God. But most people in authority are more keen on keeping their positions than on obeying God. Stephen spoke out in his day against a "stiff-necked people" who resisted the Holy Spirit and he was stoned for it. Christians still speak out that way, and Christians are still being killed. If it isn't happening where you live, is it because the people running things are so virtuous or because the Christians aren't saying anything?

Written by Philip M.McGhee,

Isn't strange that the common targets of most tyrants have always been Cahtolic, Jews and homosexuals. They have been other groups,Afro-americans in our own society, Uighurs in Chinas, but the three groups I mention seem to be common "fodder" for the worst representatives of humanity (Hitler,Stalin, Fred Phelps).

Philip, I haven't taken a survey, and you may be right. But while I do not know for sure, I suspect that after the Jews, the group with the largest number of martyrs, especially as a percentage of their membership, would be the Orthodox.

Written by Steve Doutt,

Thank you for today's meditation. I find myself always running away from the fact that being a follower of Christ requires both courage and vulnerability.

Written by Rob,

In this country today, I would agree that Christians are not being martyred because Christians are not speaking out when and where they should. I could turn this into a huge political squabble, but I won't do that - it isn't the purpose of this website. I will say, however, that there is coming a time when, even in this country, Christians will face persecution for their beliefs - even for speaking out about those people in government and those whose actions God abhors. In fact this has already begun to a certain degree, but we are like the frog in the pot of water that is gradually heating us up to our ultimate demise - and we're none the wiser for it.
