Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Mark 10:46-52. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
Blind Bartimaeus is shouting, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Bartimaeus shouts more loudly and refuses to be silenced by the crowd. There is a hearing of his prayerful yelling and a summoning by Jesus. There is an encouraging “Take heart; get up. He is calling you.” Here is Bartimaeus throwing off his cloak, springing up, and coming to Jesus. There is a questioning and an answering and a healing. The first thing Bartimaeus sees when he receives his sight is surely the face of Jesus. There is an immediate following of Jesus on the way to Jerusalem.
Here is great energy and great movement. This story is so fresh and vigorous it is likely to have come from the lips of Bartimaeus himself.
As I pray, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” from the depth of my heart, it is as though I enter a bright wave which carries me forward. I am carried forward to encounter afresh the love of God in the face of Jesus and to follow with deeper commitment.
