Humility is a strange and wonderful thing in the life of any Christian. But how do you prove that you are humble? Should you even try to get credit for humility? We sometimes see people who belittle themselves so much that they evoke the opposite response: they seem to be proud of their lack of pride!
Love is the only root that bears humility upon its branches. To see and ever to be mindful of the needs and conditions of others is the first step leading toward humility. To help meet these needs is to put into operation the spirit of the true Christian servant.
To make oneself a mat upon which others may walk at will is not being humble. Rather, it is placing self in the limelight for attention, hoping to bring notice to the act of self-abasement.
Being humble is not cutting yourself down to smaller stature. It is standing to the fullness of your height in God's presence, without forgetting how small you really are. (1960)
