Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

SATURDAY, February 5

Galatians 5:25—6.10. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest-time, if we do not give up.

We looked forward to the harvest season—particularly the harvest of the mango. Next to our home were wonderful mango trees which produced fruits with delicious golden flesh. I remember one year our sons collected baskets and baskets of mangoes which we enjoyed and gave away to grateful neighbors who celebrated the harvest also.

The mangoes grew secretly and silently on the trees until the time of harvest. There was nothing instant about their growth. Paul points to a time of harvest to encourage the church in Galatia. Perseverance in living in the Spirit, perseverance in good works, will assuredly bear fruit. Paul did not give up.

Sometimes we struggle and may be tempted to see our efforts in the short term. This can lead to frustration and disillusionment. God sees our long-term future. When we grow weary of living out the Christian life, looking forward to a bountiful harvest for ourselves and others will encourage us.

Perseverance

Feb 05, 2011 at 7:58 am

Written by Stephen,

Perseverance is for me a hallmark of faith. Although I get thrown by the vicissitudes of life, I have to remind myself that I have faced trouble in the past and have gotten through it. Suffering is part of perseverance. Faith I have found has changed the quality of my suffering. I don't believe God makes us suffer just to teach us, but there is suffering and God helps us turn it towards joy somehow. As the Christopher's say "It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness".
Valley

Feb 05, 2011 at 8:52 am

Written by Chris,

As I have and do enter the " valleys" of life, as referenced in Psalm 23, I find that skipping, running, or taking short cuts through it is not possible. Knowing God is with me, my faith and perseverance has led me through to the "still waters"
Mystery of growth

Feb 05, 2011 at 11:37 am

Written by Mary E.,

I love the line, "The mangos grew secretly and silently on the trees until the time of harvest." How does fruit grow? How does the Holy Spirit work in us as we grow in Christ?

Surely, "There's nothing instant about it."
