Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Galatians 5:25—6.10. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest-time, if we do not give up.
We looked forward to the harvest season—particularly the harvest of the mango. Next to our home were wonderful mango trees which produced fruits with delicious golden flesh. I remember one year our sons collected baskets and baskets of mangoes which we enjoyed and gave away to grateful neighbors who celebrated the harvest also.
The mangoes grew secretly and silently on the trees until the time of harvest. There was nothing instant about their growth. Paul points to a time of harvest to encourage the church in Galatia. Perseverance in living in the Spirit, perseverance in good works, will assuredly bear fruit. Paul did not give up.
Sometimes we struggle and may be tempted to see our efforts in the short term. This can lead to frustration and disillusionment. God sees our long-term future. When we grow weary of living out the Christian life, looking forward to a bountiful harvest for ourselves and others will encourage us.
